Britain withdrew from British Somaliland in 1960. In 1969, a coup started authoritarian socialist rule. In early in 1991, Somalia descended into turmoil, and anarchy. In May 1991, northern clans declared an independent Republic of Somaliland. Although not recognized by any government, this entity has maintained a stable existence and continues efforts to establish a constitutional democracy, including holding municipal, parliamentary, and presidential elections. Beginning in 1993, a two-year UN humanitarian effort (primarily in the south) was able to alleviate famine conditions, but when the UN withdrew in 1995, having suffered significant casualties. IN 2009, the Parliament doubled in size to 550 seats with the addition of 200 ARS and 75 civil society members of parliament and a new President was elected. Life for Relief and Development has been working to provide emergency food assistance and clean water by digging water wells throughout the country. Since famine was declared by the UN, Life has been working to dig water wells. Life also supplies hospitals and clinics with medical supplies, equipment and medicines and has sent containers filled with higher education books to schools and universities in Somalia. Life also provides food baskets and fresh meat to struggling families during Ramadan and Eid Al-Adha
