Egypt is one of the world's great civilizations. A series of dynasties ruled in Egypt and the last dynasty fell to the Persians in 341 B.C., they were replaced by the Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines. It was the Arabs who introduced Islam and the Arabic language in the 7th century and who ruled for the next six centuries. Following the completion of the Suez Canal in 1869, Egypt became an important world transportation hub. Britain seized control of Egypt's government in 1882. Egypt acquired full sovereignty with the overthrow of the British-backed monarchy in 1952. A rapidly growing population (the largest in the Arab world), limited arable land, and dependence on the Nile all continue to stress resources and society. The government has struggled to meet the demands of Egypt's growing population through economic reform and massive investment in communications and physical infrastructure. Egyptian opposition groups organized a campaign of non-violent protests in 2011. Following some delays, elections for a President and new parliament took place in 2012. In January 2014 a new constitution was approved by referendum and in May 2014 a new president was elected and a new parliament in December 2015. Life in Egypt Life for Relief and Development started working in Egypt in 2011 after the overthrow of the government by providing family assistance to needy families, food baskets and fresh meat to struggling families during Ramadan and Eid Al-Adha. Life also provided books to Asiut and Aswan universities through its educational program.
