Some days in life are truly unforgettable, and for 270 orphaned children in Hyderabad, India, Global Family Fun Day this past summer was one of them. This exceptional event aimed to create a joyful and nurturing environment for the orphans, focusing on both their physical and emotional needs.
Hyderabad, a sprawling historical yet modern metropolis with a population of over 11 million, is undergoing major economic and urban growth and physical expansion. Among all of India’s biggest cities, Hyderabad is top in providing luxury housing to meet the demand as major companies (e.g. Amazon, Deloitte, Tata, Microsoft) have opened offices in the city. However, as is the norm for most cities in the world, prosperity doesn’t come to everyone. While Hyderabad is excelling at luxury, millions of residents are living in slums. Basic amenities such as sanitation, electricity, and public toilets are almost non-existent in some of the 775 slum areas of Hyderabad. Open defecation threatens the health of everyone living in the area.
Amongst the chaos and struggle of life in the slums, there are the most vulnerable, innocent, precious young souls- the orphans. Being born into poverty then losing your parents to death or being abandoned due to poverty or cultural stigma, puts these children at a disadvantage which seems insurmountable. That’s why at LIFE we work hard to provide sponsors for orphans worldwide so these children can have a chance to thrive by providing all life's necessities: food, clean water, shelter, medical care, and education. Global Family Fun Day goes a step further. Festivities like these focus on the mental and emotional needs of the orphaned child by combating the sometimes-severe psychological difficulties that come from being separated from their families.
Games, prizes, gifts, and food brought smiles and laughter to their faces. The children were even given dental checkups and education on dental hygiene practices plus educational sessions on waste management and sanitation to help combat the spread of communicable diseases. Most importantly, the children were shown love. This event showed them that the greater community cares for them and cares about what happens to them. They are not alone; they are a part of a family.
LIFE is so honored to be able to work with all the wonderful volunteers to make this event a success. It was made possible because of our gracious donors. Know that your donations have made a lasting, positive impact on their lives. Thank you for your heartwarming concern for these children. Let’s continue our comment to making their futures brighter and making the world a better place for all.
